Playing Casino at Mr Green is always an adventure of sorts and in the case of Play N’Go’s Book of Dead, it’s an adventure…about an adventure.
But let’s start with its name. The Book of Dead was a collection of manuscripts put together by numerous priests in Ancient Egypt aimed at helping the dead with their journey through the Underworld. It all sounds a bit spooky, although we’re sure they put it together with the best of intentions.
Anyway, history lesson over and thankfully this slot is of a rather more uplifting nature than the inspiration for its name. How could it not be when the protagonist is Rich Wilde, an explorer in the Indiana Jones mould who fears nothing and is never happier than when he’s on the lookout for hidden treasures? Irrespective of the dangers he may come across when looking for them.
If you think you’ve seen Rich Wilde before, it’s very possible that you have. He’s been the main man in slots Pearls of India and Aztec Idols, both also available at Mr Green. So apart from anything else, the guy certainly travels a lot.
Everyone needs a budget when you set off for adventure and there are three ways to manage yours. On the far left at the bottom you can decide how much each coin you’re playing (between 0.01 and 1.0) with is worth by going up and down on the ‘Coin Value’ button. Just next to that you can choose how many Coins you want to be playing (between 1-5) and just to the right of that one you can decide how many lines (1-10) you want to have active.
The more lines you have in play, the greater your chances of having winning combinations on the reels but the downside is that each extra line will cost you a bit more to play. Playing around with these three buttons will determine your total stake per spin and you’ll see how much that is where it says ‘Bet’ just underneath it.
If you’re in ‘high-roller’ mode you can just cut to the chase and play the house limit by pressing the Bet Max button.
Rounding off what the different buttons do: Pay table shows you what the different symbols are worth when you get them in a winning combination.
Autoplay means you can automatically play a set number of spins while giving you the chance to set limits whereby the Autoplay will stop if you win or lose a certain amount, or if the Bonus Feature is activated. Lastly, there’s the Spin button: we don’t think we need to specify what that does
It’s a 5x3 reel slot and the symbols are super cool. In recognition of the fact that its inspired by Ancient Egypt, there are valuable artefacts such as a blue and gold bird, a symbol that looks like a cross between a black dog and a man (yeah, it’s a little weird) and the magnificent mask of Tutankhamun.
Making up the numbers of the regular symbols are the usual playing cards we see in most slots.
But let’s not forget the two most important symbols. The hero of this slot – Rich Wilde – is the most valuable symbol in terms of getting three in a line, which by the way can be diagonally as well as horizontally. He’s the good-looking chap with the designer stubble; you can’t miss him.
Last but certainly not least is the symbol central to the slot: the Book of Dead symbol. Interestingly, it serves two purposes here. Firstly, it acts as a Wild and substitutes for all other symbols. The game will automatically determine the most profitable way for it to substitute. And secondly, it’s the Scatter and your path to the game’s bonus feature.
Three Book of Dead feature activates the free spins, sadly the only bonus feature of the slot. Happily, it’s more than good enough to ensure you don’t really need any more because it’s equally exciting and potentially profitable to you.
To add to the excitement, when you get your first two Book of Dead symbols the game will highlight the last reel as you wait to see if it comes in.
Before the free spins start, you’ll randomly be assigned an Expanding Scatter symbol. Given that Rich Wilde is the most valuable, that’s the one you ideally want to be getting. If not, one of the ones with the Egyptian artefacts are good too as they’re the next most valuable.
When you get two or more of your assigned Expanding Scatter symbols, they will expand and take over all 10 pay lines. If it happens to be Rich, he’ll take over the whole screen and you’ll hit the Jackpot which is 5,000 times your bet.
A word of warning: this is what we refer to as a volatile slot. By that we mean that there will be times when you’ll have to be patient because there may not be medium to big wins coming your way. That said, when you activate the free spins you’re almost certain to walk away with a very decent pay-out and if you’re lucky enough to secure one of those valuable symbols as your Expanding Scatter symbol you could be securing yourself a monster pay-out.
Anytime you get a winning combination you can choose to double or quadruple what you’ve just won. The game will invite you to Collect or Gamble. Collect and the money is banked, Gamble and you get to play the side game.
If you want to go for a 50/50 shot to double up just predict whether the next card will be Red or Black. If you want to be more ambitious, you can choose which suit the next card will be. Get that right and you’ll quadruple your win just like that.
